Do You Talk to God?

Psalms are prayers or songs used in worship and directed toward God. David wrote many of these during his lifetime and there are 150 recorded in the book of Psalms in the Bible, most of which are David's. Some of these Psalms he wrote in times of trouble, some in times of joy. Others he wrote while mourning, and some were during times of celebration. When you read through Psalms one thing becomes increasingly clear - no matter what was going on in David's life, he spent a lot of time talking to God. In fact, David is referred to in the New Testament of the Bible as "a man after God's own heart..." (Acts 13:22), and while there are many admirable and desirable qualities exhibited by David, it seems none more so than His communication with God,

David gives us His insight into communication with God in Psalm 116:1-2,

"I love the Lord, because He hears
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live."

Do you believe that God is out there and can hear your prayers? David did, and because of that, he vowed to live a life of communicating with God. All of the many Psalms of David are a testament to this understanding.

Psalm 145:18 says,

"The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth."

While it was important that David talked to God and cultivated that relationship though communication, it was equally important that David do so in truth. Would God have inclined His ear toward David if David refused to worship Him as God? Would God have come near to David upon David's calling, if David were not faithful to Him?

Proverbs 15:29 says,

"The Lord is far from the wicked,
But He hears the prayer of the righteous."

David spent his life talking to God in truth. Let's resolve to live our lives the same way so that we too can be people after God's own heart.
