Being Touched by Jesus

I often think about what it would have been like to have lived in Jerusalem when Jesus ministered there. Would I have sought him out? Would I have been one among the crowds of people listening to his words? And, would I have been one of the lucky ones who got to touch him or who were touched by him?  In the gospel of Mark (5:24-34) we read of the woman who had so much faith in Jesus that she knew that if she touched his cloak that she would be healed.  Although there were crowds of people pressing all around him, Jesus knew that the power had gone out from him. What was this power? Did the woman feel the power flow into her as she touched his cloak? Well, we have no record of the woman’s exact feelings but the scripture tells us that immediately, she knew she was healed.

Can we have that same assurance today? Can we have the assurance that we have been healed and are no longer sick with sin?  Yes we can. Jesus is no longer here to touch us and heal us of sin, but he left us something just as good as his touch, his Word. In 1 Peter 2:24 the apostle writes  “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” Jesus died for a specific purpose, so that we can be healed from the sickness of sin. Peter describes this as dying to sin and living for righteousness.

The key is to live. Live in righteousness. Sin will kill us every time, unless we get healed by Jesus.

It’s nice to wonder about what it would be like to walk with Jesus 2,000 years ago but it’s better to know that if you live in righteousness you can walk with Jesus in the future. I encourage you to read the book of Mark and see what it means to be touched by Jesus and live in righteousness.
